    The Spring Garden–Elgin

    By The Chef | January 16, 2008

Last night we were adventurous! I have to say, on a Tuesday night, my only plan is to head to the LoneStar Steakhouse. Why? Well because two kids eat free with each paying adult. That means that for dinner we are only paying for the two of us, while feeding the 6 of us! Totally cheap and easy! Instead, we headed across the street to this little Greek restaurant, The Spring Garden.

We do enjoy Greek restaurants, they are about as close as we get to authentic New York city diners–and I LOVE those! So we sat down at the corner booth-big enough for the six of us–and looked over the menu. Jake chose the Steak and Eggs, Grayson the Pancakes, Blake the Hot Dog, and Barrett the French Toast. The Chef ordered the Strip Steak and I ordered the Turkey Dinner. The Chef’s dinner came closer to Medium Well instead of the Medium Rare he ordered, the kids were perfect and enjoyed by each of them, mine was HORRID! The turkey was pressed turkey–you know they squish all of the turkey bits together into a turkey loaf and then slice!! Not at all what I wanted! The potatoes were instant, and the worst possible brand ever. The stuffing was good, but it had huge chunks of green pepper and onions in it. I don’t mind green peppers and onions, but only when they are diced small enough to meld perfectly with the size and texture of the rest of the stuffing. The absolute worst part of my meal were the mixed vegetables. They came right out of the bag in the freezer–and I mean it…they were still frozen! I was heartily disappointed–and even though two of the meals came with dessert we didn’t even bother to stick around for it.

I felt really bad. We had gone in for cheap–and honestly $60 later we would have saved $30 to eat at the LoneStar and I could have had my Texas Rose (bloomin’ onion) that I’ve been craving for days!
