Why Oh Why Oh Why???

Before I go any further…answer me this!! Why if we are not going through the biblical 7 years of famine are we creating recipes featuring bugs? We were out today trying to snap some pictures of molting cicada’s–and when none were to be found I looked them up–and THIS is what I came up with!!!
Ok—That being said, I thought I would share the fun and exciting (read GROSS) experience that we are getting to go through right now!!
I didn’t realize that cicada’s molt. I honestly think that this is where the inspiration for the movie Alien came from. We helped a molting cicada out of it’s exo-skeleton so the kids could see the new insect. It was this little albino - yucky thing just like the above one–but there was no green or red eyes!
This is one tree–and you can see all of the exo-skeletons of the cicada. That is one gross left over after all the cicada are gone–there are just tons of empty exo-skeletons left. You walk on the grass and it’s crunchy–so gross!! Here is one shot of the sidewalk–all of the black spots are cicada bodies!!
I don’t know if you can see this one–but there is a hole in the middle portion of the exo-skeleton. That is where the ‘new’ bug came out of. But notice, even with no bug in it–it still sticks to the fence–YUCK!!
And here is the final picture of what the final stage looks like before the wings come in full and they go up really high and make the obnoxious noise!! Hope you enjoyed the trip through the life a cicada!!

Ok, I have looked at those food pics and I think I may have to throw up. LOL
We just found our first skeleton today.
